For decades, Point West Rotary has supported our local schools. We identify which schools and student populations need the most support and apply our talent and resources to their needs. We have funded field trips, built and stocked food pantries, expanded summer camps and augmented summer school experiences, provided classroom supplies, and developed and funded educational programs, including advancing literacy and incentivized learning.
Our Arden-Arcade neighborhood in Sacramento is a diverse community with a large immigrant and refugee population and other economically challenged and high-risk student demographics. Children in these neighborhood schools struggle academically with low test scores reporting and proficiency levels for both math and verbal skills at below half the state averages. To add to the challenges, over 35 languages are spoken at these schools, and nearly 90 percent of the schools’ students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidies
Basic educational materials in these schools do not exist. The struggling communities are in survival mode and need the means to supplement the schools’ resources like more affluent neighborhoods.
