American River Clean up

Every April and September

Join PWR as we team up with the American River Parkway Foundation for the Fall Great American River Cleanup! PWR manages the cleanup activities at the Watt Avenue American River Access Point off La Riviera Dr. PWR is committed to helping preserve and enhance this special place. Two times per year (Spring Clean-Up in April and the Great American River Clean-Up in September), we gather up our members, friends, and family to help with the clean-ups. Clean-ups are essential to removing trash and debris from the Parkway, allowing the environment to heal itself and preventing trash and debris from entering the ecosystem and waterways. Together with other organizations, these efforts result in more than 120,000 pounds of trash removal annually. In past years, up to 2,100 local volunteers have come out to help remove debris from multiple areas along the river, highlighting why the Parkway is the greatest civic amenity in this region.

Eagles Golf

Every Tuesday at 5:30pm - 7pm May through September

Every Tuesday at 5:30PM May through September The California Eagles is a golf program for athletes with special needs. The purpose of the program is to give them the opportunity to learn and enjoy the great game of golf. The program began almost 40 years ago, and members of Point West Rotary have been volunteering as coaches for 35 of those years! The coaches teach life enhancing values, including honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect courtesy and responsibility through the game of golf. They support the athletes on the golf course, driving range, and putting green. You don’t have to know how to golf to volunteer! It is more about being supportive and providing encouragement. Sponsored by Haggin Oaks Golf Course, Morton Golf Foundation, the First Tee of Greater Sacramento, and the Rotary Club of Point West. The group meets every Tuesday evening (5:30 - 7:00 pm) from May through September. Giving time to this project is a fulfilling and worthwhile experience and makes a difference in the lives of these golfers.

Loaves & Fishes

Loaves & Fishes is a nonprofit organization that has provided multiple survival services for Sacramento’s homeless for the last forty years.  A volunteer group from Point West Rotary began three years ago preparing and then serving a cold breakfast once per month at Loaves.  Breakfast and hot coffee benefit approximately two hundred guests.  This modest gesture of goodwill speaks volumes about the Rotary goal of helping others.

Partners in Leadership Conference

Every Fall

The Partners in Leadership program, hosted annually by Point West Rotary since 2011, empowers high school students with essential life skills and leadership training. Through a full-day conference and ongoing mentorship, students engage in discussions on ethics, decision-making, public speaking, and more. By the end of the program, participants gain valuable insights, build confidence, and receive a personalized letter of reference. To date, over 385 students have benefited from this signature youth initiative. Click "Learn More" to discover how this program helps shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Since 2011, Point West Rotary has hosted its Partners in Leadership program for Encina High School students, offering an annual, day-long off-campus conference designed to introduce students to key life concepts. Each year, approximately 30 students are selected by Encina’s teachers, counselors, and principals. A similar number of PWR members volunteer to participate, pairing up with students for one-on-one conversations throughout the day.

The conference begins with breakfast and the distribution of a program t-shirt, followed by an opening session featuring a guest speaker. Students engage in discussions on important topics such as ethics, values, and decision-making, with a special focus on the Rotary Four-Way Test. The session is followed by interactive exercises that challenge students' thinking and personal values. Lunch is provided, and the day culminates in a student-led skit that highlights key concepts from the day, including ethical dilemmas and leadership decision-making.

The learning doesn't stop at the conference. Following the event, PWR members continue to mentor the students through monthly Roundtable meetings at the school. These sessions provide students with the opportunity to reinforce and practice the skills they learned at the conference, such as public speaking, ethical decision-making, leadership, and taking personal responsibility. Other key topics include how to be a positive role model, trust in oneself, and tips for success in college and job interviews, including resume writing.

At the conclusion of the program, students are recognized as PWR Partners in Leadership award recipients during their graduation. They also receive a personalized letter of reference, which can be a valuable tool for future college or job applications.

To date, over 385 students have participated in the program. Many graduates go on to pursue higher education or enter the workforce to support their families.

The Partners in Leadership program has become a hallmark of Point West Rotary's youth initiatives, helping to shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Drew hitting ball at the Puttin' For Polio event

Puttin’ For Polio

October 18, 2024

Puttin’ for Polio is a fun, family way to fight polio at home and around the world. Held each October, Puttin’ for Polio brings people together to take a swing against polio. Held at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, participants jovially compete against each other for the best dressed, best score, and closest to the pin. All proceeds benefit Rotary International’s polio eradication efforts. Breakfast is served and is fun for all. Many younger people now don’t recall the ever-present fear of contracting polio. Widespread use of the anti-polio vaccine came into being during the 1950’s and has made polio much more unlikely to inflict young people today. However, polio still exists in several countries where vaccines are not as accepted…and polio could spread back home from these places unless efforts continue to vaccinate worldwide. We hope you will join us this October and take a swing against polio!
