2013-14 President

Making a Life
One Child at a Time

2013/2014 Presidential Message

We are the Rotary Club of Point West-Sacramento and we are celebrating our 28th year of “Service above Self.”  It might be hard to imagine that you could have fun and laughs at 7am on a Friday morning but we make it happen every week.  If you attend one of our meetings to see for yourself, you will probably want to attend another.
We are not just about fellowship and fun however.  Our membership of 155, performs countless hours of community service and fund raising each year employing a variety of different ways and events.  We start with our two major fund raisers.  Our Spring event is Festa di Vino, which is a wine and food tasting extravaganza with silent and live auctions.  Our winery and restaurant partners donate their products to help the bottom line.  We typically raise $25-$30,000 net in a single day.  Our Fall classic is The California Brewer’s Festival now in its 18th year.  Our Brewer partners donate their beer to help the cause.  This signature event typically raises $45-$50,000 net in a single day.  Every volunteer, member or otherwise, pays full ticket price for the privilege of volunteering.  These events require tremendous amounts of planning and coordination from the membership.  We also get incredible support from our wonderful charity partner organizations for these events, Sierra Forever Families and Assistance League respectively.
We perform community service and provide support in many other areas as well, including Salvation Army, Christmas Promise, Eagles Golf, Folds of Honor, American River Parkway, Uyoba School in Zambia, Africa, Thomas Edison School and Encina High School to name a few.
We love helping kids and we wear that credo like a badge of honor.  Whether it be through our TEES tutoring program at Thomas Edison, our Scholarship and Rotary Youth Leadership programs at Encina, our Ambassadorial Scholarship program or our Rotary Youth Exchange programs, we are there, in a very strong and supportive way for the young people.  We help change lives and it feels really really good!
Let’s not forget the fun!  Sure we have fun working together to help others but there is also plenty of social activity and fellowship among our members.  Annually we have a Bowling Bash and pizza party, a Cocktail party and mystery dinner, our Golf Tournament, our President’s Demotion Party and many other fun events including a Softball team, where Rotarians get together to enjoy each other’s company.  Believe it or not we actually have a “Fun” Committee focused on new ideas of how we can enjoy being together.

I have been a Rotarian since 2001.  When I first started attending meetings at Point West in the Fall of 2001, 9/11 had just happened.  When I saw what incredible things the membership was doing to help survivors and families of victims, I knew Rotary Club of Point West was the place for me.  I have never looked back or regretted that decision.  I love this Club.
In Rotary we have a Four Way Test to help guide us:  Is it the Truth?  Is it Fair to all concerned?  Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?  Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?  If this rings true for you, come to a meeting and find out firsthand about who we are and what we do.  We meet at the Double Tree Hotel, 2001 Point West Way, Sacramento, CA 95815 at 7am on Friday mornings.  Your first breakfast is on us!
